La ciencia ha documentado que la pesca de arrastre de fondo tiene impactos negativos en los ecosistemas. En países de la Unión Europea, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Nueva Zelanda, entre otros se han establecido regulaciones para este arte de pesca, mientras que en Chile no se ha establecido ningún límite.
Actualmente existe un proyecto de ley que busca prohibir la pesca de arrastre de fondo en la pesquería de la merluza común, el cual se encuentra en discusión en el Congreso Nacional.
