El reconocimiento mundial que ha tomado la costa de la comuna de La Higuera, en Coquimbo, no es casual. Gracias al conjunto de islas e islotes, este archipiélago alberga uno de los ecosistemas marinos más ricos, fuente de investigación para biólogos y destino privilegiado entre los turistas que viajan al norte para avistar ballenas, delfines y al emblemático pingüino de Humboldt.

El pingüino de Humboldt es endémico de la corriente de Humboldt; su distribución se restringe a las aguas de esta corriente y podemos encontrarlo desde Isla La Foca, en Perú, hasta la Isla Puñihuil, en Chile (Hays 1984; Wilson et al. 1995; Simeone y Hucke-Gaete 1997; Wallace y Araya 2014). Por lo mismo, su vida está moldeada por el hábitat marino en cuanto a sitios de nidificación, modo de alimentarse y las estrategias reproductivas que usa.
En Chile se han identificado sus dos peaks reproductivos, los que ocurren en mayo y octubre. La selección y ocupación de nidos comienza cuando los pingüinos regresan a las colonias de reproducción, después de un largo periodo de búsqueda de alimento y recuperación (De la Puente et al. 2013). Esta ave marina puede alcanzar un tamaño entre 67 y 72 centímetros, y un peso de entre 4,2 y 5 kilos.
¿Por qué proteger al pingüino de Humboldt y su hábitat? Lamentablemente está en peligro y en la Lista Roja de especies amenazadas de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) (2013); considerado como una especie vulnerable, se encuentra frente a un riesgo alto de caer en peligro de extinción si no se toman medidas urgentes.
Sus principales amenazas son la sobrepesca, ya que ésta merma su dieta, haciendo cada vez más difícil que encuentre los peces de los cuales suele alimentarse. A esto se suma el bycatch o pesca incidental, ya que muchos pingüinos se enredan en las redes de enmalle. Por otra parte, la destrucción de hábitats como consecuencia del desarrollo costero también ha afectado su población, ya que se reducen las zonas de reproducción y, además, al ser una especie de pingüino más tímida que otras, la presencia de humanos en los sitios donde nidifica aumenta su ritmo cardiaco haciendo que abandonen los nidos y con ello a sus huevos o polluelos (De la Puente et al. 2013).
Hace años el pingüino de Humboldt estuvo a punto de desaparecer frente a las costas de La Higuera, sin embargo, se concretó en el lugar la Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt y con ello, una protección efectiva hacia esta especie en peligro, notándose importantes signos de recuperación.
